For us, it’s personal…
The EDS journey had already begun… we just didn’t know. It was years before we understood even the basics of what was happening. It took even more time to begin to understand the implications. Along the way, we were grateful to find people who’d already been down the path, or whose curiosity led them to join us in discovery. But that didn’t happen often enough.
It made us realize…
If just one parent knew that a dramatic decline in a previously thriving teenager’s functioning might be a signal of an underlying health problem — not simply motivation or behavior — perhaps they would start asking different questions sooner.
If just one more teacher or coach knew that the student who suddenly stopped showing up and completing work might be struggling with an invisible physical limitation, perhaps the conversation would start with curiosity rather than consequences.
If just one more clinician knew how difficult navigating suspected EDS can be for a patient, perhaps that clinician could become an ally rather than an obstacle.
If just one more parent knew that that substantial disability can occur even in an extraordinarily capable young person, perhaps the family could begin preparing earlier for a different path into adulthood.
So we are pouring our energy into gathering pieces of EDS knowledge and getting it in front of the right person when knowing it could change what happens next.
Because when that happens, the EDS journey will be better.
